There are a million articles on getting in shape, staying
in shape. All the tricks to make it happen quicker and
how to stay focused. We have seen them all, and in all
our efforts to maintain our exercise program we have tried
nearly all of them.
For many just finding the time to workout becomes the biggest
obstacle and the biggest obstacle it is. We have all had
goals, but this time we have the biggest goal yet, and that
is getting in shape for your wedding day. And working at
it so hard that it becomes a lifestyle change, something
we look forward to every day.
For those of you that are fortunate enough to have access
to a gym, get ready to use it. But… you will need to
get out of your comfort zone and try some new things. Our
bodies get used to the same exercise and begin to plateau,
so we need to change things up on occasion or just have a
program that is very diverse. I know some of you are very
comfortable with the treadmill. After taking nearly 10 minutes
the first time just to figure out how to work it, why try
something new. I know, I understand, but just think of it
as a brain work out as well.
Your goal should be to go from a 20-minute walk to a 40-minute
walk over a few weeks. But also add in spurts of running,
even if it is for just 2 minutes at a time. From there you
need to venture over to some other equipment like the elliptical
or the rowing machine. Now when you really get the courage
up try one of the classes that are offered there. I know
this may be very intimidating at first, but just show up
early and talk with the instructor let them know you are
new and find out if there is anything special you will need
for the class. Give it a try.
Now for the really intimidating part of getting in shape.
You will at some point want to incorporate weights into your
workout. Again if there are weight machines at the gym ask
one of the fitness personnel show you how they work.
All right, so you have read this and you think that sounds
great, but I don’t have access to a gym, what about
me. Well, don’t worry, you can do all the same things
just in a different manor.
You need to have the same goal. Start by walking for 20 minutes
in your neighborhood. Have your goal to be walking 40 minutes
within a few weeks. You too will want to add a few sprints
to your workout. Doing this outside is sometimes easier because
you can have a distance goal instead of a timing goal. Look
at the nearest mailbox and start running or even sprinting
if it’s really close. As the weeks go on try and do
more running or sprints.
You too can take time to do some “weight” training.
As you walk through the park, stop at the bench and do some
tricep dips. Turn and do some bench squats, barely touching
your bottom on the bench before you rise again. And don’t
forget the pushups.
I know these still seem like more work than fun. I understand
that too. So recruit a buddy and once you have them hooked
you should try and play tennis one day. Or even stop and
shot hoops at the local park. You will get a lot of exercise
chasing the ball if you are not a very good shot, just remember
to run after the ball.
Exercise is what you make it. Getting in shapes is all about
what you want. Find fun things to do, and always pat yourself
on the back when you are done, because you are doing something
that many people aren’t willing to do, you are taking
care of yourself. You will look great for your husband and
you will have energy to have fun together. And most importantly
you will have a long life together.
